I have that exact hitch but never ever thought it was original. I am curious why you think it is original ?

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
Ford made Assessories for Model As for the dealers to make money. Consequently it would have been an advertised Assessory. If it was advertised by Ford I would think it would be in the judging standards which it is not. My guess is its aftermarket

I don't have the book of non authorized ford accessories handy to see it there is such a thing in the book as a period accessory or a latter Western Auto/Sears kind of thing.

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
Because places like Western Tire or J.C. Whitney sold ones that look like this. That to me seems more obvious than Ford. I have seen Many threads about accesories and the hitch was never mentioned, I still think it is an aftermarket produced to meet a need. I bought it at Hershey from a vendor that said it fit many antique cars and I am sure it does. I used it to tow a Coca Cola trailer but do not use it now. Wayne

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
When I purchased my Model A Deluxe Town Sedan (155-D) it was equipped
with the same application. That was 1959 and it was an original car. |

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
So who has towed with this hitch? How does it perform? Like Bruskie, I reckon it lacks strength and would stretch pretty easily??
Not sure how heavy a Coca Cola trailer is, or even what that is?? |

Looks like something any farmer with a torch and a drill could have made in the 30's.

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
They refurbished and made old coca cola chest coolers to look like new and then they mounted them on a small four foot platform with an axle and wheels. They were towed by older cars and motorcycles. Surprised you never ever saw one.Wayne

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
I have one like that on my 28 pickup except it has a second bar below and extra holes to put a pin through next to the ball. It's mounted on 30 brackets & bumpers. Works great, towed a load of iron with it in an A pickup bed trailer.

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
Very common after market accessory. I made one that is not so obvious it is on the back of the sedan, a receiver goes in when I want to pull the Mullins trailer.

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
Good to know this. I might use pins in place of the bolts, so when I am not using it I can just pull them out real fast then.

Talk to your insurance rep before you tow or install a hitch on your car.

I have this one on my Pickup. Second picture is the same hitch on a coupe with a rear mounted spare tire (not mine).

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
I like the hitch Carl shows, and being a reciever hitch, you could make a slip in tool box for it.
Clem could make a slip in beer cooler. |

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
Have one on my 29 it pulls my trailer just fine. 2200 miles to Montana and back with no problems or distortion. I guess I wouldn't pull a loaded box car with it but the light trailer pulls well.

That looks like pretty cool trailer that you pulled. Is that a HF one with just different wheels?

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
Ford made a trailer hitch for model a's. He just didn't know it at the time. An old timer told me that down in Texas they used the front axle off of a model t and turned it side ways and ran bolts threw the spring perches and bumper clamps. They drilled a hole in the center he said and pulled cotton wagons down there back in the day.

Thanks Rodvirus, but no not a Harbor Freight. I built it from scratch. I'm thinking about converting it to a tent camper this summer. I found these pics at mtfca.com

Oldbike99:
Having trouble sending pic thru private message, but here's a pic of the hitch. Looks like the left arm is bent a little, but that can be worked out, still need/want it?

Re: did the Model A come with a trailer hitch?
BOY! Seeing the Picture of that Trailer Hitch Brings Back NIGHTMARES!!!!!
I was in my Early Teens and my Parents Only had a Single Car garage and my dad had our 29 Tudor Sedan parked in the Garage, Well my Sister had a 1985 Toyota Car and wanted to wax the Front end of her Car, and their was just enough room for her to pull the car into the garage behind the A and in the shade of the Garage. Well she asked me to Guide her into the garage and let her know how far she could get her car in without hitting the A, I got in back of the model A and tried to guide her, Well she Dumped the Clutch in her car and pinned my right knee between the the hitch and her Bumper! I am allot older now and i have had three knee surgery's on my knee! I Removed the hitch along time ago! LoL. Allen |
