fuel line routing on a 40 Ford
How was the fuel line routed from the engine to the gas tank on an original 40 Ford coup ??? I bought a 40 project car with no lines remaining , and want to run new lines. Were they originally on the OUTSIDE of the side frame or INSIDE the frame rail??? If outside, like most old Fords, how did they fasten , with the running boards attached to the outside as well???
Pictures would be great! Thanks for any info, Steve |

They had a few clips which held it to the top of the bottom flange of the left hand frame rail until it gets to the firewall and then turns up and and has a clip on the firewall before it goes into the flexible hose.

At the rear the line scoots across at an angle from the frame rail across the top of the rear crossmember and straight into the fuel tank fitting.
Having it shoot across like that saved Henry a few inches of pipe per car (My theory anyway). If no-one has any pictures I do have some tucked away somewhere in the dusty corners of my computer drive. Mart. |

Here's a pictorial. It goes on the inside bottom of the left frame rail.

Re: fuel line routing on a 40 Ford
I was wondering the same thing, so I'm interested in the answer too. Does the line go through a hole in one of the diagonal frame braces straight to a hole in the other brace or does it dip down and get clipped to the bottom frame rail?
Thanks, Ben |

Re: fuel line routing on a 40 Ford
I'll post them here, Steve, then everyone that wants can see them.
These pics were as found after I pulled the body. The fuel pipe routing as far as I know is as Henry's men placed it in 1940. In the first two pics there is a trick of the light that makes it look like the pipe runs inside the x member, it doesn't, as shown in the third pic. Before anybody asks, the car was USA spec left hand drive. The observant amongst you will also see slightly extended shackles with a panhard rod attached. These worked quite well. Mart.
