Default 48-6044 Rod, engine radius purpose.

What was the Ford design purpose for the 48-4044 rod, engine radius for the '37-41 pass cars. I have for years heard they were "clutch anti-chatter rods" Was that the real purpose ? In the '40 where the fan is very close to the radiator core I can see the benefit of controlling forward motion of the engine on a sudden stop. Than you Fordbarners.

The rear wheels push the rear axle along. The torque tube pushes the engine forward. The rods pull the car.

Ford called them "engine stay rods" as they keep the rear end and t-tube from shoving the engine forward. They were discontinued when they went to open drivelines. 8BAs do not have a place for them to connect to. They have nothing to do with stopping chatter.

When the engine & transmission moves it disrupts everything connected to it, this includes the clutch linkage. When you let the clutch out and the car starts to move the torque tube tries to push the engine/transmission assembly forward. If the stay rods are not in place, and the engine/transmission mounts allow movement, the clutch linkage moves with the transmission. I believe this is where the "anti-chatter" rods name comes from. The movement of the clutch linkage can contribute to clutch slippage.

My '47 Super Deluxe does not have these rods, unlike my '39. Both have 59AB's. Often wondered why they were discontinued?

One reason might be a change in the clutch linkage. The early linkage was more sensitive to movement between the transmission and the frame. The later linkage has a joint that makes this movement less of an issue.

Ah, that makes sense! For whatever reason, my '39 always "chattered" and my '47 does not. Thank you JS for posting the diagrams and your explanation.

^^ The other reason is the redesigned rear mount. It affords more fore/aft location than the previous designs. The new rear mount, in conjunction with the improved clutch linkage was deemed to have done the trick by Ford.

Thank you learned Fodbarners. I understand how they got the name anti-clutch chatter rods which was a side benefit to the principal purpose.
