Thumbs up Re: 1966 289 no start

You're OK.

It sounds to me that as long as the car has sat, the fuel system is filthy.

why not disconnect the fuel line before the pump(cap it off) and empty the carb. then dribble some fuel in the top of the carb. If you have spark it should start, but briefly. If it starts then rebuild the carb as now you know it's a carb problem. water, moisture is another thing

I believe I found my issue, never seen a timing chain so loose you can almost flip it off with a screwdriver.

That's definitely "a" issue. It might be interesting to see just how far off (late, or retarded) the valve timing might be. N.b., this is different than ignition timing.

A quick & dirty method is to roll the engine over by hand slowly clockwise 2 complete revolutions and stop with the pointer on the "0" TDC mark. With the distributor cap removed, now slowly turn the engine counter-clockwise while observing the distributor rotor. As soon as the rotor starts to move, stop turning, and note how much "slop" there is measured in crankshaft degrees.

Exclamation Re: 1966 289 no start

... damn ...

That explains the no start.

The fuel pump is driven off the camshaft and it is still overfilling the carb fuel bowl with the stretched chain. I think she still wants to live ...

Forgot to ask, does the cam gear have nylon teeth?

Try and buy a timing set from CLOYES that has a steel cam drive gear. That nylon gear gave FORD a lot of headaches.
