Default 'tis a puzzelment

The ammeter moves erraticly from + to -, sometimes pauses briefly around 0 then right back to dancing left and right. Accelerating doesn't seem to make much difference. I have moved the third brush and that didn't help either. Any and all ideas are welcome.

Check for loose electrical connections everywhere including in the generator. Make sure the brushes are making good contact with the commutator.

Also check the voltage cut-out if it's an original or point-style reproduction (as opposed to the newer diode style cut-outs). Be sure the ampmeter does not show discharge with the engine off

Put a good quality voltmeter on the battery and see what the voltage there is, also on the cutout, see what its doing. As others have said, check all connections for cleanliness and tightness.

We need to know how the power generating system is set up. OEM style generator with a diode or cut out is one thing but an alternator conversion is another. It also helps to know if the car has a modern replica 20 or 30 amp indicator or does it still have an old original amp meter?
