'54 Ford/Mercury Power Steering Conversion
I have found a company that makes a power steering gearbox to convert Y-Block Fords & Mercs from manual steering to power steering without using the problematic, leaky slave cylinder like the factory set-up. It's manufactured by a company named Borgeson and sold through Summit Racing. It appears to lay up on top of the frame like the manual gearbox does. Part #800115 is the gearbox or #999020 for the complete kit. It states that you have to alter the clutch bracket for manual transmission cars, which I have. What I'd like to find out is whether anyone on this forum has installed one of these because they are not cheap and I'm reluctant to spend $595 for the gearbox or $1,030 for the kit and then find out that it won't fit. Any information that any of you can provide is greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Scott |

Re: '54 Ford/Mercury Power Steering Conversion
Hi Scott, I installed the Borgeson power steering box on my 54 Ford with an inline 6 cylinder engine and automatic transmission. I was able to retain the column shift setup with the box with room to spare. However, the manual shift mechanism has two levers and room will be a little tight for that. I understand that the clutch linkage must be modified to accept the Borgeson box.
All said I am extremely happy with the Borgeson power steering. My car drives so much better now. Borgeson has a tech support person that could address the clutch issue I am sure. Jack |

Thanks Jack, I will try to contact the Borgeson tech person and inquire about the clutch issue. And thanks for the quick reply.
