Default voltage regulator

Hello, first time using the forum!A number of years ago I replaced the three brush generator on my mostly original 36 coupe with a one wire 6V pos.ground alternator, because I was tired of adding water to the batt. and trying to get the right setting of the third brush.I recently learned about a regulator that would take the place of the cut out.I would like to go back to my generator again, but even though suppliers list it, none have it and don't know when they will get it.Has anyone installed one?Does it work well?
Thanks
Frank
