Default Starter bendix spring bolt

Greetings,
My starter would not engage so when I removed it I noticed one of the bolts holding the spring was missing.I ordered a new set but now I am concerned about the old bolt and washer somewhere in the flywheel housing. Will it cause damage? If so how do I find and remove it from the flywheel housing?
Thanks for any thoughts you may have on this issue.

From a previous post on this. I haven't needed to try this, yet.

The vacuum cleaner method got the washer out but the bolt remains hidden. Dare I drive it this way?

I'd make every effort to remove it, if it was my car.
Here's another discussion and method:

A wad of heavy grease on the flywheel teeth!

I had the same issue. Used the magnet on the fly wheel per https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showth...lywheel+magnet thread. Worked perfectly. Fastest repair job to date on my cars.

Also found another bolt and 2 extra washers that I was not expecting to find. It was Christmas in August!

Fixin' a door rattle in a NEW Volvo, found 8 screwed up hinge bolts & a BEER bottle--Once, found a Swedish made ratchet that caused a LUMP, in the seat cover.

When I bought my A home last year I had never even heard one run so I had no idea what "normal" noises were. There was a particular rattle sound that continued for a few seconds after the engines was turned off. The clutch was slipping so the first wrenching I did was clutch plate replacement. It all went pretty well and the rattle turned out to be a SK Tool 1/2" extended socket in the flywheel housing. There is a hole in the top of the housing but it doesn't seem to hurt any thing. I do have another housing ready to install someday.

Loose items in the clutch housing must have been a problem back in the Model A era because all of the Model B engines that I have seen had a large welch plug in the lower clutch housing that would permit easier removal of any nuts, bolts, or washers running loose in there.

Success,
After failed attempts with globs of grease and a magnet on a flex shaft, I went back to the vacuum cleaner. It took a little while but it finally worked.
When and if you try this method be sure to take the collection bag out of your shop vac first, elsewise you may not know of your success.
Thanks for all of the clever ideas folks, now back to finding my original problem of fixing morning sickness.

Hello,
I'm reassembling a bendix with new bolts and locking tabs, the bolt closest to the starter is hitting the armature shaft like a set screw, is this bolt too long ?
The other bolt is lining up going into the hole on the shaft and looks OK
What is the torque on these 5/16" bolts ?
Thanks

The long bolt has to be installed in the end of the shaft, and the short bolt has to be installed on the inner end of the spring.

Thanks Tom but that does not answer my question, the short bolt is touching the shaft when installed with the lock washer and spring, is the bolt too long ? Should the worm gear section of the bendix be able to slide on the shaft ?

The long bolt has a tit on the end and fits into the hole on the shaft-this is not the problem.
Thanks

Do you have a picture of the spring and bolt?
Later I'll measure my spare parts and list what I have.
Yes, the pinion should spin freely on the helix. There is a tiny pin and spring at the end of the pinion drive that holds it from vibrating into engagement. The pin should have a drop of oil, and I put a thin coat of light oil on the helix. ATF will work well and keep it from rusting.

For some reason the starter spring bolts aren't listed in the back of the Parts Price List, where the dimensions are given. My starter short bolt is 11/16" long and is smooth in the area that fits through the special locking tab washer and the 3/8" wide spring loop.

Thanks Tom,
I'm going to grind the short bolt down so it doesn't hit the armature shaft.
