I recently put a second mechanical temp gauge on the pass side head along with the original gauge on the drivers side on my 39 with a 59a in it. problem is the 2nd gauge doesn't start reading until the thermostat opens then shows 180 degrees but if you put the sender in a pan of water and start to boil it the gauge starts climbing right away. sounds like the temp probe isn't going into the head far enough to hit the coolant which is full by the way and thermostats have vent holes to let the air out. question is do they make different adapter fittings (3/8 male to 5/8 ) lengths with the seat so I could get the temp probe farther down in the head. original gauge works as should. sorry for the long wind. Maybe bleed the air off below the sender unit by un-screwing the it until water comes out and tighten it back up or removing reseal threads and make sure the cavity is full of water before installing.

thanks Lindsay.....I tried that. I had filled the head to the top before I put the probe in. you can feel everything getting warm but the gauge doesn't budge till the thermostat opens. almost like the probe has to go deeper but I can find the adapter fitting that goes into the head that will let the probe go deeper.

Are the leads on the gauges long enough to switch them side for side? Might be interesting to see if the problem moves.

Tubman I put the second gauge probe on the same head as the original gauge (drivers side) and same thing. no reading until thermostat opens but original gauge is fine. I left that as is and borrowed another new gauge a buddy had. put it in a pan full of water to boil and gauge climbs as suppose to. put that gauge in the pass head and the same thing...no reading till thermostat opens. 3 temp gauges and the only one that is working proper is the one 80 years old (hahaha). For some reason the coolant level in the head is down just enough to mess up the gauge readings. going to have to get the probes a little deeper in the heads if I can find some different fitting adapters for the probes. thanks for the reply.

I wonder if you have a couple of small bypass holes in thermostats that might help.

there are 1/8 inch holes in the stats now. Maybe I could go to say 3/16 or 1/4 " and try that. thanks for the reply.

1/8 inch is already fairly large for a bleed hole.

hi i got the same problem. i was planning on buying a new water temperature gauge. i got the mecanical gauge on the driver side and original one on helper side.
