Default Power valve in 97 carburetor

If the engine backfires through the carburetor does this always call for replacement of the power valve?

To my knowledge no . They are a metal seat style valve so as long and the spring is still good and the plunger/seat (not sure the correct name) moves freely they are probably ok .

No, not on the Strombergs. It's usually the later carbs (94's?) that have that problem.

The power valve is operated manually with the accelerator pump rod on the 97s. The 94s are operated with a flexible diaphragm and that is what is blows out.
