Hood hinges
DISCLAIMERS: I am in no manner associated with this company; however, I discovered Auto Metal Direct, manufacturer of hood hinges for many cars and trucks. Touted as "just like OE" - just make your own decisions and analysis.

Re: Hood hinges
Well guys, I don't know what to say: I obtained the information from FordMuscle.com; they have always provided straight information previously......

Re: Hood hinges
Try this link to the page of hinges.
http://www.autometaldirect.com/advan...+hinge&x=0&y=0 Marcus, I think it was the ";" after the .com that killed the link. |

Re: Hood hinges
Well, 40cpe: I suppose that is my error, attempting to maintain proper sentence structure! At least, you solved the mystery and I appreciate that!
Dobie - In the information I read, there were listings for mid-60s automobiles as well as pickups. Perhaps I should delve further??

Re: Hood hinges
I should have been more specific. There were no listings for 50s Fords except pickups, no passenger cars.

Re: Hood hinges
If worse comes to worse, you can always get new hood hinge springs from the repro parts guys. If the springs still got their strength, you can have them sandblasted clean along with the rest of the hood hinge assembly and repaint.
Some guys who prefer chemical cleaning in the dunk tank, remove the springs prior to handing the assembly over to the dunk tank and either replace their old springs or have them sandblasted. Then repaint everything once it is all cleaned. I noticed one of the repro parts suppliers is now offering stainless steel hood springs for 55/56 Ford cars as well as regular carbon steel. (you wouldn't necessarily need to paint the stainless steel springs). |

Re: Hood hinges
Replace old springs rather than sandblasting if possible

Re: Hood hinges
'52 thru '54 hood hinges are part of the air vent duct assembly at the firewall. They can loosen up where they pivot and bend unless lubrication is attended to on a regular basis. They can be straightened and reinforced and I believe they are being repopped now. No idea what new ones cost.

The hinge is held on mounted only to a plastic air intake? Nothing else anchors it? Never fooled with anything prior to 55/56. Does anyone have a photo? THANX!

Re: Hood hinges
No, the air intakes at the firewall are metal.

Re: Hood hinges
'52 thru '54 Lincolns had the same type of hood hinges as the '52 thru '54 Fords with the flat, spiral wound springs. They were a maintenance nightmare. Once those things get rusty, if you can get the hood opened without bending it, you cannot get it closed again.
Yes, the 52 thru '54 fresh-air intake ducts entering the firewall are metal and were used to bolt the hood hinges to. In '55/56, they changed the design so that there was flanged round fresh-air intake ducts mounted on the firewall, so they had a flange sticking out the side of the cowl and had holes in it to mount the hinges on two studs outside and two studs under the dash. All hood hinge mounts were completely independent of the fresh-air duct system. |

Re: Hood hinges
On 54-56 Fords, the hinges are mounted on the tube running from the front to the passenger area (for fresh air). At the firewall end it ends in a box. The hinges are mounted on that box.
