Model B engines had the pad to stamp for the serial number but it was never used (exception for a very few locations that required the engines be numbered, and in these cases they were stamped locally and not at the factory). The Model B serial number was stamped into a pad on the flywheel housing. How about a picture of the number you are looking at? The number you give is too high for a Model A or B engine. The stars before and after the number are missing. Except for those facts the number might have been stamped by someone removing a Model A engine and replacing it with a Model B engine..

As per Charlie Stephens comments, I have found a number of B engines that had been stamped with numbers of all kinds, some with Model A numbers (with and without stars) and some with numbers of unknown significance. The numbers were stamped on the pad on the side of the block, a casting featured retained from the Model A era but not used by Ford during and after the Model B era. Most of mine had come from industrial applications and were of the "diamond block" type that were manufactured by Ford from 1935 - 1941. My current Model B engine came from a railroad "track speeder" out of Shasta County in California. It is stamped DR 5675, whatever that means.

That new number sure changed the question. The number still should appear on the flywheel housing and not the pad on the block, except for a few very isolated cases. I get February 1932 for the manufacturer of the engine, http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/ABenginenumbers.htm#C7

Yes English B blocks are stamped on the block itself with 'curly' script

Some state governments in Australia require an engine no. Even in the old days.

CA required engine numbers also. Its not unusual to find a V8 here with a number on it.

That is interesting. I live in California and have only seen one or two Model B engines with a number.
