Small victory for old technology.
Today I hauled just over 3 tons of old wood to our transfer station, in my '52 F-6. It's an old county truck and has a Hurculese dump bed on it. She's not real pretty but the flathead runs like a top and it has never let me down. On the way, I passed two guys on the side of the road that were obviously having trouble with 2 ton, Isuzu cab-over dump. I pulled off and asked what was up. They said that it just quit. They weren't happy campers and the one guy told me that the truck was less than a year old and it was loaded to the gills with old lumber. They said that they were fine, so I went on. On the way back, I noticed that they were still there. I pulled over again and this time they were more than happy for the help!! I backed my '52 up to their bed and a hour later, we had my bed loaded. They jumped in with me and we took their load to the dump. The younger of the two was in awe of my '52 and was confused when he saw me double-clutch and work the two speed rear end and the older one was just too pissed to speak. After that, we went back and I towed the Isuzu about 3 miles to this guys shop. I would have taken a picture as it would have been priceless but the older guy, although very grateful for all the help, was not in the mood for a Kodak moment.
Anyway, it was a pretty cool deal and it's not everyday that 60 year old technology gets to save the day! I'm pretty proud of Ole' Yeller! |

John,
He didn't seem like the type of fellow that would have even seen the humor in a in a Mel Brooks movie!! Then again....he wasn't having a very good day! |

Re: Small victory for old technology.
That's the way a truck should look...the broom and the battle scars are evidence of long and useful life.

Re: Small victory for old technology.
I would not change the appearance of Ole' Yeller in any way shape or form. That truck looks exactly like it should stay, IMHO. Now what we really need to see is Yeller rescuing a Chubby Chebby and a Dodgy Dodger

Re: Small victory for old technology.
Great story, I especially like your comment about the double clutch, hadn't herd that in a while. On a similar note, I have a DeSoto Convert which I rent for weddings, was driving a happy couple from the church to the reception, it was a little cool, I tole the groom (early 20's) he could roll up the window if he wanted, after a moment he asked where the button was, he was amazed the the car had a window roller handle, never seen one before. The younger generation is lost.

Re: Small victory for old technology.
Thanks for all the compliments on my old truck, I appreciate it. There is something really beautiful in it's ugly, simplicity that I just love. I've thought about selling it a few imes recently to get a "newer" one but this old girl would be tough to replace. we've done a lot of hauling together and she's way more faithful than a lot of women that I've been involved with!
Bruce...I will say though that your description of the truck with it's "broom and battle scars", did conjur up memories of my ex! |

Re: Small victory for old technology.
Bugsy thanks for the memories. I sold my 56 F-5 last year & although I have no more work for it miss it a lot. Had it since 1988. Hauled many a losd of dirt & gravel with ole blue. It was originally dark green & was built for the US Army. P O painted it blue & all the time I took care of just need to do the lube & oil. Those old trucks really are Ford Tough. Yours is definately a keeper.
