1936 Steering Box Replacement
My '36 Steering Box is getting pretty bad. I would like to replace it with a '37 box. I understand there are detailed instructions / comments on replacing it.
Can someone point me to the thread for doing it? Thanks |

Re: 1936 Steering Box Replacement
I went through this exact process about two years ago. It's A LOT of work, but well worth the effort. That '37 box is practically like having power steering!
Does your car have mechanical brakes or hydraulics? Mine is still mechanical, which caused a few unforeseen difficulties. |

Re: 1936 Steering Box Replacement
Converting a '36 Ford to '37-40 steering gears can be quite simple if you have the right parts. If you want to retain the original light switch it is a little more difficult adapting the original switch to the bottom of the steering gear box.
I would suggest converting the light switch to a modern pull switch on the dash and a modern dimmer switch mounted to the floor between the clutch and brake peddle with a push button on the dash. The conversion requires the frame mount for the steering gears from any '37-40 Ford. You will also need a '40 pitman arm, part # 21-A3590-3 015. I converted my '36 Ford coupe to '40 steering box in 1952, it was like adding power steering compared to the original Gemmar worm-sector.

Re: 1936 Steering Box Replacement
Thank you all, Is there anywhere with detailed instructions? I don't even know how to get the horn button off. Let alone the Steering Wheel.
Admiral- I have juice brakes. Bluecar-I don't need the original light switch but I'd like to keep the horn button functional. Another question: Is there a way to reply to each one of you individually? |
