31 Roadster Question

Some of the tabs are rusted off on the bottom of a 31 roadster rear quarter panel so I'm thinking about welding new tabs to the inside of the panel? Any other suggestions on a better fix? Thanks

Is this where the quarter is spot-welded to the sills?

Terry when you say "sills" are you referring to the sub-rails?

My question is about the tabs? I'm not sure what tabs the OP is referring to. The sub rail is there and the quarter panel attaches to it. Sub rails are available in half length and full length sizes. I refer to the outer edges of the sub rails as flanges. The bottom of the quarter panels like to trap moisture between them and the sub rail so they do like to rust away after near 90 years.

The area that I'm referring to is from the door back to the wheel well. The quarters are attached to the sub rails on the bottom with sheet metal tabs that are part of the bottom of the quarter panels. The tabs are folded up under the sub rail and crimped. Most of the time on a roadster they are rusted out so my question is how to fix the missing or rusted out tabs. Amy one just welded tabs on the bottom inside of the quarter panel?

Shure, as long as you have good metal to weld to, you can weld it however you want to as long as you are happy with it.

I just cut pieces out that aren't weldable and patch in where ever is needed either with spare metal fabrications or cuts from some new replacement patch pieces if you prefer. You want that B pillar (the support behind the door) as strong as it will be so the doors will shut well and stay that way. All the support there comes from the attachment of the frames & sheet metal to that body sub rail & seat frame. That pinch weld area on the bottom provides a lot of support too. It effectively joins three layers of steel together.

Actually, there is no such thing as a "sub-rail". It is a Sill Assembly (A-40030-B/-40031-B), -or Sills for short.

The sill plate there on 28/29 roadsters attach to the sub rail to strengthen the area and add rigidity there. 30 & 31 are different but not a lot. I see no point in arguing about nomenclature. To me it is substructure and it is a rail in the way it is shaped. Most folks that sell these items refer to them as sub rails but they also sell sill plates.
