I am replacing the tower and after making a new gasket for the tower / body surface I notice there is no gasket on the vertical surface where the two plungers slide in.
Is this correct or do I need to make a gasket for that surface?

See Toms reply, I forgot the gasket between the transmission and bell housing.

There is a gasket that covers that vertical surface. It is the gasket that fits between the rear of the bell housing and the front of the transmission. It extends up and covers around the two shaft holes. The gasket comes with a transmission overhaul gasket kit.

I would make a partial gasket if yours is missing.

I don't even use a gasket up there anymore, on either surface. I clean all mating surfaces dry, and smear a little Ultra Black on put it together. Never had a leak after that.

If you ever have your transmission out, I would highly recommend installing the transmission-seal-deal, or whatever it's called up on the inside of the bell housing, made by Mitchell.
