Default Steering Wheel Finishing

I have a repo 28/29 steering wheel on my truck. Will it deteriorate from ozone, like some other polymers? Im speaking of how some plastics and rubbers get real sticky from hand grease or ozone. Will it be necessary to paint the wheel?

I've been told to use just a base coat and not something that includes clear. I'd assume this is most rattle cans. Unfortunately, getting just a base coat (even in a rattle can) is quite expensive.

We have had a repo steering wheel on our 1929 for over 25 years, no problems.

Enjoy.
