Default Locked up rear end

Hello, I am new to model A and recently purchased a chassis and motor, I had the motor rebuilt and it is free to turn,( I can turn it by hand with the trans in neutral) but when I put the trans in gear and try to push it, both rear tires lock up and skid along. I did this to see if the engine would move, it does not when in gear. When in neutral, everything rolls freely. Can anyone tell me where to start looking, trans, rear end?

May be broken pinion Gear teeth in Differential (rear end) remove fill plug and fish magnet in and see if you get broken teeth? just one thought.

if it rolls in neutral the differential is fine

maybe your trans is going into 2 gears possibly a shift fork issue

Take the sparkplugs out and give your test a try.

The trans had been sitting for many years, is it difficult to rebuild yourself or better to but a rebuilt one?

I actually pulled the head off, piston moving fine. It will roll about a foot, then both tires skid on the garage floor.

Try pushing in 3rd gear with the spark plugs out.

Take the shift tower off and make sure it is actually in neutral.

Ok, I did take the shift tower off, same results. When I push the chassis forward or backward, the gears just barely move, then things are locked up? Is there a way to check if all of ?the gears are free to rotate

It sure sounds like the shift forks aren't properly engaged in the gears, and two gears are in mesh at the same time. If you can shift to neutral and all is fine, then I'd shift to first gear and see if you can hand crank it. If two gears are engaged at the same time you won't be able to hand crank it more than a quarter turn or less.

If you don't have a hand crank and want to roll it, then do as Mitch said and shift to third gear.

Jack up one rear wheel and see if you can spin it when the tranny is in neutral.

One more thought is that you could have a rear brake issue. My parking brake was messed up when I bought the car and it would roll a couple feet and lock up. I fixed the brakes (parking brake lining) and all was fine.

I'm not so sure you actually have a problem... I would think it would be hard to push a chassis without much weight against compression of a new engine in gear......
Maybe I'm missing something.... have you tried to start the engine and motor the chassis forward or reverse under power?

You would have to put it into 3rd with the plugs out to have the most advantage of rotating the engine while in gear... and it may take a couple of guys pushing to do it with a new engine....
again... maybe I'm missing something?
