Special Coupe Top
What was the "original" seam pattern for a Special coupe top.? Did all have a drip rail.? Main concern is area from 1/4 windows to rear window area, and across the top of the rear window..
Thanks.. kb |

Re: Special Coupe Top
On mine, there is no seam going form the 1/4 window to the rear glass. The seam runs across the top above the rear window at about the crown of the top. The drip rails on mine stop a short way down from the top of the 1/4 window, then followed by wire-on. I have pictures of my car before and during the restoration which do not show any drip rail going down to the belt molding. If they are supposed to be there, mine didn't have them. John

Re: Special Coupe Top
The "extra" seam leads me to believe it was repaired/replaced in it's life. When it comes time for me to replace, just wanted to know how they were.
Still in good shape, just wondering.. H-mmm |

Re: Special Coupe Top
There should not be a horizontal seem like shown in the second picture. Also the vertical seem should be aligned with the T trim on the sides of the trunk. The seem on you car is too far to the outside. I, with the help of 2 other people, installed the top back section on my 28 special coupe on a very hot sunny day. It was hard to stretch the top material over the compound curves. But after a lot of stretching and retackng, the top came out with no puckers.

Re: Special Coupe Top
Rusty is right. try " model A special coupe images" search on your browser . You'll see correct and incorect. What you need is measurements OR buy a sewn kit from one of the upholstery folks from the stickey page.

Re: Special Coupe Top
Please correct me if I am wrong. . . . Doesn't the grain of the top material go horizontal across the back side of the cab? Check on this before re-doing the top.

Re: Special Coupe Top
The grain on the rear part of the top of a special coupe DOES go horizontal if you want it like Ford installed it. I have heard of some top kit makers running the grain vertically, which is not the way Ford did it.
