Default Do You Guys Constantly Re-touch Wheel Spokes?

were the original lug nuts on the wheels slightly wider than repros, as it seems to me the wheels always get scratched using the crank tool, which is a sloppy fit.

Do you guys use a regular socket to take wheels off?

I once saw a suggestion to wrap foam around the crank tool but in any event, how do you guys avoid marring the spokes and the wheel hub, especially on colored wheels.
