squeaky brakes
There are a couple of us in our "A Team" that seem to have squeaks in our brakes. I have one drum (right front) that only squeaks when I'm going backwards. One of our guys, after much work and rebuilding, has very good brakes but still has squeaks. He has centered the shoes, rebuilt the entire backing plates, and installed new cast iron drums, sanded the shoes and yet the brakes talk to him when stops, not every time but often enough to make you crazy.
Did Model A brakes make noise when they were new cars? Are we doing something wrong? Marty |

Re: squeaky brakes
Ours only talks to us on the first trip out each spring.
I do remember many years ago when it was common for cars to be using brake shoes, a lot of cars made noise. If everything in the system is correctly done? Maybe the old bones are just talking to you. |

Re: squeaky brakes
Try "chamfering" the leading and trailing edges of the shoes.

Re: squeaky brakes
The brake shoes are the standard woven with the metal in them and we have already chamfered the shoes. I think WHN has it right, they're just old bones talking. I know my old bones talk to me regularly.

Re: squeaky brakes
Mine are talking to me also. All new from previous owner and I know the fellow who restored it. Does great work. I am taking the riveted woven pads off and installing Randy's bonded softer pads and drums this winter.

Re: squeaky brakes
Hello gentlemen. A little experience from my end...
I do many brake jobs and am known for doing good brake work. I use to use the woven linings with good success but over the years the linings have changed. The brakes themselves stopped finexnad with all the right stuff done . Chamfered shoes and linings, centered, tight pins etc. I stand behind my work but was tired of replacing linings in fairly recent jobs that were squeaking. After some homework and speaking with folks who supply linings I discovered that they say it’s the resin compound that hold the woven lining together that is/can cause the noise . I use a soft molded lining now and no longer have any of those issues. Good cast iron drums and soft molded lining in my opinion is the way to go. Just my 2 cents worth. Larry shepard |

Re: squeaky brakes
Larry,
Where do you get these soft molded linings? I think I'd like to give them a try. Marty |

Re: squeaky brakes
Iget then from a brake supplier up east but Snyders is also recently handling a soft lining as well. I am trying a set of them right now. I believe they should be good as well. Marty, Drop me a pm When you get a chance.
