Default Rear hub bearing seal

On the eve of destruction. Ordered new drums, with hubs, seals and snap rings. Plan on using the old, good bearings.
Having a time getting the seal out of the old hubs. Prying, punching; nothing working, yet. Yes, the snap ring is removed.
Read about dropping the hub from 2 feet and letting the bearing force the seal out. Have dropped it from 6 feet, repeatedly - didn't budge.
Tomorrow is another day. The Dremel with a cutting disc may be my answer!

I've used a large pry bar to pop them out, or a large screwdriver might also work.

When you install the new ones, be sure to tap them down only far enough for the snap ring to fit in the groove.

I have dropped a large socket into the hub and used a rolling head pry bar to lever it out.

i take an ice pick to make a small hole in the metal clad of the seal.. then slap it out using a small slide hammer with a sheet metal screw on the end

Tried that; sheet metal screw pulled out without the seal.

Sounds like it would work, but I'm not equipped to do that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Tried all sorts of pry bars. The only thing I've managed to do is remove the rubber part and seriously deform the outer metal lip of the seal.

Thanks for the caution concerning the new seal installation.

then collapse the side of the seal a little with a screwdriver or small flat chisel using the hole you made with the pick..
then retry with a new hole and a decent size screw

these methods work for me

youll get it one way or the other

the suppliers do sell a seal install tool that sets it at the correct depth FYI..

Thanks. I saw that. I guess I'll try to struggle along without it. Getting tired of buying these one-time-use tools. Might try turning one out of oak on my wood lathe.

That's funny! We always think of the guys working on model "A"s.

Recently on the MAFCA tour in Maine there were quite a few ladies driving the A's.

Keep up the good work---

I do the drop trick often. You can't just drop it, put a little oomph behind it! Tales more then one good drop for them to pop out. Use card board (if you haven't cleaned them) on a piece of plywood on cement floor.

There was a post several years ago by Tom Wesenberg or Tom Endy ??. He used a cut off axle stub as a fulcrum and a "Cats Paw" (carpenters tool) ($12 at Home Depot). It works quickly and is worth having because it will be used again by yourself or someone else.

This is what I used. I had the hub in a vise and was pulling on the long end. Arm strength and body weight didn't get it.
Decided to pound on the long end with a BFH. That did it!
