Default Symptoms of a Bad model B4 fuel pump ??

Ok could have posted in Model A also.
Well it seems to be a bad fuel pump or 2 even on our 32 B4. Was coming home and cough splutter splutter struggled to just get in the gate off the highway and we were dead in the water. Walked a few 100 yards to the shop and brought an electric pump back to the dead B4 , which when fitted got me home. The original pump did pump some when bench tested . tried a second unknown B4 pump and it bench pumped some , but neither would make the 32 fire up.
So are symptoms of a bad fuel pump nil fuel or poor flow ?? While the pumps bench tested some the pump chamber seemed empty whe we took the top off.

If there is a leak anywhere between the tank and pump it can make a good pump seem bad
If you have a vacuum gauge see how much vacuum the pump can pull ---- if you don't have a gauge use finger over inlet hole and see if the pump sucks on it--- if yes move to flex hose--- then to pipe at tank

If the pump both sucks on the inlet side and gives pressure on the outlet side, the leak is elsewhere as Kurt suggests. If it fails one of those first to two tests, the leak is likely in the cover gasket at the top or around the acorn nut at the top. A failed diaphragm could also be the culprit, but less likely unless the lower body is dripping gasoline when you remove the pump from the side of the engine block.

I think we need to find a leak . As with the electric pump fueling the B4 and it running the pump has 2 1/2 lb vaccum and 2 lb on the pressure side ,well air pressure as its obviously got no fuel in it.
Probably need to pull the deck off the pickup to inspect fittings closely . We fitted a 32 passenger tank to the rear of the pickup.
Any tips on tracing an air leak?
