Default Ball Bearing

I bought this from Bratton's thinking I'd get a quality part.

Should I use it?

Just because it comes from China does not mean it not a quality part. If it was made for a company in Japan it might be top notch...then again.

I have been told that Ball Bearings are no longer made in USA. Just like many other things that the USA was once the world supplier.

Direct from the KYK China Shandong factory horse's mouth:
"The material we mainly using Include high Carbon Steel GCR11."
"Quality level: reach the same level as the Japanese and European bearings"
"Tolerance level: ABEC-1 (P0)"
(P0 is sloppy, P6 is extremely tight)
"Noise Level: EMQ V1 Z2"
(V1 = worst vibration on 1-4 scale, Z2 = noise on 1-4 scale)

Certainly no winner on a quality scale, but probably a good match for an 80 year old tranny running low speeds and filled with 600 oil. I'd mic the I.D., O.D., and width carefully. If that checks out clean out the junk grease it is packaged with in a clean container with new solvent and look for grinding fines in the solvent. Then decide if you're happy with it.

For awhile we were changing a whole lot of good old USA made Timken wheel bearings. The BCA replacements are still going on down the road.

Yes, this is why I keep going 'round and 'round....I thought the same thing about the Japan/China connection.....my toyota was made in Japan, maybe with chinese parts...114,000 miles and no problem...

It's a sealed bearing...

Now how about that Made in Mexico throw-out bearing!?

I think this is part of the new "HOPE and CHANGE" policy.
You hope it lasts, but may have to soon change it.

If it says Japan, I'm happy. If it says China, I worry. If it says Taiwan, I won't use it.

1955cj5, That bearing be fine bathing in 600wt.

I called the local McGuire Bearing store and was told there are no US made replacements for my transmission main gear shaft.....

I asked about Timken and he said they are assembled here, but the parts come from elsewhere....

Another place carries SKF..The SKF # is 6209...they do not have it in stock..$52....

Of the four bearings I replaced all are made outside the US, I suppose any one of them could fail and the fix is the same..pull the engine again!

So I'll stick with what I have...

Here's a story that might help us understand..

Back when I was a woodworker, WOOD Magazine had an article about foreign machinery manufacturers. During a visit by WOOD to one of the major Companies over there, they were told that they can make any level of quality, depending on what the USA buyer wants.

So, maybe it shouldn't be a perceived notion that foreign stuff is cheap. Maybe it's what we ask for..

So, we need to find out which Supplier wants the best. But how? Just like this.
