Since I'm a mechanic by trade and careful with my funds, I've never owned a new car or truck. Both of my later model Ford/Mercury vehicles have bugs on the glass. They aren't for the same purpose as they once were but they are still marked by the manufacturer as far as I am aware. Carlite & Carlex are the more modern names for Ford glass.

Ford starting using them in the Model A era one the windshield only with the exception of special order cars and town cars. They were applied to all the glass from 1932 up till the present day, with the exception of 1932 standards and other odd ball vehicles such as school buses. Basically any piece of glass that was safety glass rather than the ordinary plate glass, got a bug or marking of some sort and still does to this day

In the words of Pink Floyd, "Is there anybody out there...?".

Thank you Dave! Been waiting for a reply. I presume they are on all window glass?

Yes, ever since all of the glass used was either tempered or laminated 'safety' glass.

Hello,on standard model Fords , the side glass was plate glass.does anyone know if they had “bugs”on them? I know on deluxe models they were safety glass ,would be a option on standard models up to at least 1934 ,assuming the plate glass is unmarked.

you are correct Plate glass was unmarked. However, and I may be wrong, but I believe all 1934's had safety glass both STD and Deluxe.

Sorry, I missed that post, great info. So for my '32 Model B 5W I'll only need them for the windshield and backlight I presume. For my '56 Meteor Victoria every piece gets them if I need to replace. Do you know if any reproduced glass have them already installed?

Thanks!

To answer your questions, yes and yes... presuming your 1932 is a standard not a deluxe.

Sanders glass sells excellent reproduction glass with the bugs etched in already. They are a good company to deal with but very expensive. They do the bugs by blasting them on as original. Sanders glass also offered the original type black edged glass

There are a few other small glass companies that will sell you glass with the bugs in place, but all they are doing is ordering the kit from us and acid etching it in place prior to shipping.
