Default Observation: sediment bowl seal

While tracking down the smell of fuel, I noticed that the sediment bowl was full of junk again. After removing and cleaning the bowl, I inspected the underside of the bowl housing and noticed that the seal was cork, which had turned to powder. Having just replaced the tires I had spare inner tube material and made a rubber gasket. And now the observation . . . when you have a good seal at the sediment bowl on my car, if you just open the fuel shut off valve . . . no fuel will flow into the bowl. Not a drop. For a moment I thought the fuel line was clogged. Nope. It wasn't until I loosened the bowl would it fill up with gas. I thought that was an interesting observation.

Yep, you have an air lock between there and the carb needle.

Fuel can't come in until the air can get out.

Just open up the nut at the carb end a tiny bit and let the fuel flow for about 2-3 seconds and that will push out the air.

Not too sure how long the inner tube will last.

Your carburetor is full of gas it wouldn’t let anymore gas in. I just drive the car and it fills back up in a few miles.

Not sure either. Though it might work okay. I plan on using it only as a temp fix. Since carburator gaskets are mostly just cardboard it seems . . . might try that also.

Happens to me all the time on several vehicles.
I replace the gasket with a new cork gasket anytime I take off a fuel bowl. If you don't, they usually end up leaking since the old cork has taken on a set from the glass bowl.

Don't trust the inner tube rubber. I use cork as I have had bad luck with neoprene too.
