51 f3 v8 flathead to 6 cylinder flathead swap
Hello all. Does anyone have a picture of a 51 f3 frame with a flathead 6? I am replacing the v8 flathead with a 1947 226 g series flathead 6 and it looks like the frame mounts are different due to the length of the 6 cylinder. With the v8 mounts the balancer hits the front crossmember and the radiator will not mount. No sure what I need to do or what parts I need to change to make the 6 cylinder work. Any ideas or pictures? Thanks!

Re: 51 f3 v8 flathead to 6 cylinder flathead swap
Assuming the G and H 6s are roughly the same size...
There are two locations for the radiator support, the one closer to the bumper is for the six cylinder. In order to change location, the fenders will need to be detached from the support. There will be some messing aound to get the fender suppport braces to like their new neighborhood. The battery box changes sides as does the voltage regulator. Other changes include the radiator, accelerator linkage, choke linkage, exhaust, and fuel line locaton. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have any pictures of my engine bay. How did that happen?

May be a great motor, but seems like a lot of effort and expense just to devalue the truck? If it is a long time keeper it might make sense, but if you were ever considering resale it seems like a step in the wrong direction.

Re: 51 f3 v8 flathead to 6 cylinder flathead swap
Well, if that engine is appreciated, it wouldn't.
My best friend, in 1958, bought a stock, '50 Ford, with the 226 engine. We were ALWAY's street racers. That 226, won most of it's races we ran against the '49 - '51 Fords. The factory spec's show that it's capable, with both 6 & 8's putting out 180 ft lb of torque. The 6 at 1200 rpm and the 8 at 2000 rpm. So, depending on the weight of the car, number of passengers (and their weight), the gearing and length of the race, the 226 had good odds. Now if he were to put the M series or Rouge 254, 6 in it or bore and put that crank in. It might not look as good as a 2 carb, V8 but would certainly pull better. Frank |

Re: 51 f3 v8 flathead to 6 cylinder flathead swap
The original V8 was cracked and I bought another V8 and that was cracked as well. I got this g series for next to nothing already rebuilt. It was a military fire truck engine. Yes, parts are a little difficult to find. I am sure it will fit, cant be much different from the h series. Dimensionally it measures about the same, just not sure if the mounting in 51 between the 6 and 8 are different. The truck is going to be a family heirloom, it was my dad's. It will be driven as much as possible. Got a long way to go but will get there. Thanks for the interest.

It should fit fine. I put an H-Series in my 41 Tudor and I didn't have to modify anything. It bolted up to the stock transmission. I have the same motor mounts as you and they bolted up to the stock location too. Although I think mine are turned in the opposite direction as yours.
So I am sure it will fit just fine in your truck. |

Just curious, but what is going on with those external oil lines? They don't look stock. Does it have some sort of full flow oil system on there?

Thank you all for the kind words. The oil filter is a military spec filter which I believe is full flow. I found a NOS filter for it. Turns out it is used on heavy duty fire and off road equipment. The lines are a rubber coated and braided.

It looks like a by-pass setup.

Yeah, could be. I think when I had the fittings apart they looked restricted.

Re: 51 f3 v8 flathead to 6 cylinder flathead swap
Truck is pretty much a basket case. My dad bought it in 1988 , he died in 91and it sat in my moms backyard until 2007. Did the chassis and brakes in 07 and then sat again ( this time in a garage) until 2017. Really at a point where I can make some progress I hope. Did figure out the mount situation. The engine mount brackets were backwards on the flathead 6. Switched them side to side and it fits just fine. Thank you all for the insight.
