Default Speedometer not working

I have an early(4-'30) 1930 standard coupe with a Mitchell o.d.

On the ride home from Newburgh,NY, the speedo stopped working.
Found the Mitchell speedo extension was not working and obtained a new one rom them.

Speedo cable is 3 years old.

Installed new Mitchell cable & connected it to the main cable. Speedo not working.

I disconnected the cables. Ran a drill on the main cable and speedo works fine.

I turned the rear axle and felt the inner Mitchell cable turning as it should.

Reconnected and tried again. Speedo still not working.

Suggestions/thoughts??

Thanks in advance.

is the Mitchell cable end the same size as your main cable end where they connect. it sounds like it may be there.

I will check that tomorrow.
The original cable they sent workd fine up until last Sept.
The replacement they sent was the same length and when I checked it out, the internal cable worked fine.

I had the square cable end of the original cable become a bit too rounded to work properly when attached to the Mitchell cable.
Replaced it with a new cable and solved the problem.

My son had an issue with the crimp on the Mitchell cable not being tight enough and the cable turned inside the end. Sue replaced that one.

If the female end of the Mitchell cable end is too deep, the front cable can pull back out of the speedometer head and will not run. A small screw dropped into the female socket will prevent this from happening, you have to measure the difference in the length of the cable end and the depth of the socket. Make your screw or rod a little shorter than the difference, this will keep it plugged in to the speedo.

3/18/17

Speedo cable checked-working fine

New Mitchell speedo cable extension, bench tested, also worked fine

Mitchell cable connected to o.d. unit did NOT work at all.

Checked internal Mitchell gear, while rotating rear tire and gear did not move.

Inserted Mitchell extension in the o.d. unit and it did not turn while turning rear tire.

Tried this in all gears and in/out on o.d. unit... Did not turn.

I will be calling Mitchell on Monday for their help.

Mark:

Did as you suggested and speedo now works.
I also got the Mitchell extension seated properly in the o.d. case.
Thanks!
