1928 Phaeton
I'm working on a Canadian 28 Phaeton, in the rear seat area, where your feet would rest if you were sitting in the back seat, there is a wood "trap door" and under that trap door there is a storage pan. Is that floor pan reproduced?

Re: 1928 Phaeton
I bought a repro from Macs in 2000, but the 3 ribs are down instead of up. Ahen the ribs are down they collect water if you happen to store wet side curtains.
There is also someone in Ohio that makes them and sells them on ebay. I think the ribs aren't exactly the correct length, but otherwise they are fine. I'm thinking I will have to make my own to get them an exact copy. |

Re: 1928 Phaeton
I drove to Mac's 2 x, both times they gave me the wrong pan! I need to take another trip to return the last one they sold me.

Re: 1928 Phaeton
Having that location is really nice. They changed it the next year and isn't any way as convenient in my opinion. Always nice to have the side curtains where you can get to them as the weather changes.

Re: 1928 Phaeton
I bought a reproduction curtain tray from Antique Auto Sheetmetal in Brookville, OH about 3 years ago. They are owned or somehow related to Brookville Roadster. I have 2 original curtain trays, but they are too far gone to restore. The curtain tray I bought was the correct size, however the three stiffening ribs were not shapped or placed correctly. If you are not a purest, the standard tray they make would work, but I didn't want a bad reproduction. I returned the tray to the maker and had them make one without the stiffening ribs. I gave it to Will Cronkrite at Hershey 2 1/2 years ago to stamp the correct stiffening ribs in the tray with his PullMax tool. I gave him the correct shape and placement of the ribs. He did an excellent job making the correct ribs. The tray is extremely close to a duplicate of the original tray is have to compare it to. If you need a picture or dimensions of the tray or ribs, let me know.

Re: 1928 Phaeton
Classiccanuck,
It is much easier to send pictures attached to emails. If you want some pictures of an original curtain tray and the repro, please send me your email address in a PM. I will dig out the trays in the top of the barn and take some pictures of them Rusty Nelson |

Re: 1928 Phaeton
I know that the 28 Phaetons and early 29's had side curtain trays, but when did they discontinue the trays?

Re: 1928 Phaeton
I know that late January 1929 phaetons had curtain trays under the rear floorboard as I have pictures of an unmolested late Jan phaeton and it has the curtain tray under the rear floorboard. I am not sure when they were changed, but it was probably sometime in February or early March. There is a 60 day window stated in the judging guidelines, so the curtain tray could easily go into March or even early April. It would be nice to get some information on early 1929 phaetons concerning curtain trays.

Re: 1928 Phaeton
Thanks Rusty,
We have a July 1929 Phaeton (at least that's what we think it is according to the engine number and number on the firewall). I'd love to have a curtain tray, but it looks like it isn't applicable. Robert |

Re: 1928 Phaeton
I suspect the opening on Classiccanuck's 28 phaeton was modified from what it originally was. Can you post some pictures of your rear floorboard/curtain tray area? That would help determine what you have. I have seen a number of phaetons with curtain trays and none were as narrow as what you have. I am not sure the side curtains would fit in such a narrow tray.

Re: 1928 Phaeton
Those are the correct measurments for the trap door opening, but the metal pan itself is much larger. It extends forward to make pretty much a square pan a few inches deep. I'd have to crawl under my 28 Phaeton to get the pan dimensions.

Re: 1928 Phaeton
Classiccunuck,
I misunderstood the measurement you posted. I think you are measuring the dimensions of the opening of the rear floorboard. Like Tom stated above, the curtain tray I sent you the dimensions of, has the long part of the tray running front to back and goes under most of the front seat pan where the front edge is attached. When a curtain tray is installed, there are two permanent side boards on each side of the trap door. They are about 6" wide and run front to back. There should be two pair of small holes about 3/4" apart on the body crossmember below the front seatback. These are were the hinges for the door are attached. I have some more pictures of this are if you need them. Rusty Nelson |
