Default phaeton top studs

I have a 28 phaeton that I am trying to restore and I am at the stage of putting on the top irons. The top studs that fit into the 1/4 panel are supposed to thread into the body. Mine don t because the hole is too big so I will have to put a nut on the inside of the body to accommodate, but I can t get a nut to fit including the top nut on the outside. The thread on the stud is supposed to be a 7/16-14 and when I put the thread guage on it it reads 14 but a 7/16-14 nut won t fit on it. Does anyone know if the threads are especially high to create a tighter fit or are they a special thread.

In my 1929 Phaeton the top studs do not thread into the body but thread into a bracket mounted inside the body shell for that specific purpose.

In the early cars there were several different top brackets, locations and thread sizes.

On my '30 phaeton, the threaded hole inside the body sheet metal wasn't square with the sheet metal hole for the top saddle. It took some reefing with a drift punch before the stud would line up good enough to start on the inside threads. Another problem was that the studs that I bought from Mac's were about 1" too short. I made new studs out of stainless and they fit and looked much better than Mac's did. I hope that your new top folds up better than mine does. i have repo top irons and it took a lot of fitting before they would fold correctly. They still want to scratch the body paint if one isn't careful enough.

The studs screw into a bracket which attaches to the rear door pillar and the rearward brace. The body area is just where they come through.

I have an early 28. Mine thread into a fixture inside the body and behind the inside trim.

Do you have top brackets like the one in the picture below? This is what phaetons I have seen have attached behind the large hole in the quarterpanel where a stud screws into the bracket. The bracket is attached to the body wood behind the quarterpanel and spot welded to the underside of the top of the quarterpanel.
