Default Removing Ign. Lock Cylinder 1940

Does anybody know the "secret" on removing the ignition lock cylinder on a 40? I can't get it to turn anymore and it's in the lock position. I have a new lock cylinder from Drake to replace it.

Look on the under side below the lock cyl and you should see a pin drill a small hole and tap it and a small slide hammer can be used to extract the pin. Then the lock cyl can be removed. Personally, I would not go to all this trouble for a Bob Drake replacement, NOS ones still show up.

Have you tried squirting something like WD 40 into the slot. This worked for me on an outside door lock

All three of the previous posts have offered great advice.
Once you have removed that pin, I'd suggest you drill the hole out and tap it for a
5/16" - 24 tapered set screw.

Funny you mention WD40. That's exactly what I did and got it to turn counter-clockwise to unlock. I don't have a small slide hammer. Isn't there another way to get that pin out?

I drill it out. Start with a small diameter center drill, move on to a 1/8" diameter drill, then a 1/4". Pull the cylinder.
Finally, drill and tap for a 5/16" - 24 set screw (.272" drill bit).

By the way, WD-40 is not really a lubricant. It kind of acts like one for a short time.

drill the small holding pin on the under side of the cylinder then screw a sheet metal screw in the slot where the key goes pull out cylinder with a vice grip when cyl is removed drill the holding pin hole out & tap it to accept a grub screw

As described above, drill and tap the plug. Here is a puller I jury rigged to remove it. A little overkill on the weight because it came out easily. John

You can try to drill it out, but if the drill gets off center you can create yourself a mess. The cost of a cheap slide hammer is cheaper than the potential of ruining a good ignition lock.

If you look for a NOS ass'y, check pics very closely. I bought one for my '41 and it fit fine except the set screw indent was 90 deg. off. Also even if the cylinder looks/ listed as correct, the tab inside that unlocks the column may be wrong
