Flathead heater continued
On an earlier thread I indicated that I was having a problem with my 52 v8 heater. Recently, I flushed the heater core and bypassed the control valve which , I believe, is faulty. The core looks very clean with no sludge when flushed. However, I'm still not getting any heat when the engine is at normal operating temp. The hose from the block to the core is quite warm. The return hose from the core is cool. The system is circulating from the core to the lower right exit at the block. The temp at the radiator fill appears quite hot.Can't seem to figure this out !

If the supply hose is hot and the return hose cool, there is none to very little flow THROUGH the core...some sort of blockage. DD

I would get an IR gun so you can start checking with the temps actually are at different locations in the system. They are fairly cheap and handy for a lot of things.

Once it stops snowing and warms up a bit, that is exactingly what I was going to do, sicne my heater works perfectly.

V8 COOPMAN: I agree with you! However, I was getting a total, clear flow of clean water coming through the heater core. I backflushed it first and then reversed the procedure. Both directions showed positive results. It doesnt make sense to me! I will repeat the process tomorrow and report the results. Thanks for responding!

My next move would be to remove the hose coming out of the core and stick it in a bucket and start the motor. See if the system is circulating the water thru the core. The temperature gun is a good test also. If hot water is going in, the core isn’t plugged and the water is coming out cold...... what’s taking the heat out of the water???? ....Mark

You might pull the hose where it goes back into the water pump, to see if you get water through the heater system. It is possible that the pipe going into the water pump could be clogged.
This will be a two person job, one to pull the hose and one to put their thumb over the pipe. Last edited by Merc Cruzer; 11-21-2019 at 07:43 PM. |

Exactly were do you have your hoses connected, input connection vs. output connect, on the engine in your car? You may have gone over this in a prior post that I have not read.
I don't have a hot water type heater in my 35 fordor sedan that utilizes the cooling system, but I know if I did, there are connections I could make where the coolant WOULD NOT FLOW through the system properly.

When I first bought my car, the heater was just one of the things that didn't work. The car has sat for well over 10 years. When I decided to rebuild the engine I de-rusted many of the parts to include the water pumps. The reason the heater didn't work, was a clogged pipe, on the water pump.
You can see the pipe was completely clogged even after soaking it for 24 hours in rust remover. Two person job, one to pull the lower hose and one to put their thumb over the pipe, or not, if the pipe is completely rusted shut, like mine was. Obviously I bought new water pumps, for the engine rebuild. |

Merc I'll get back to you!Cruzer: Good point on the hose to the water pump! Since I'm getting circulation within the core, maybe the exit tube to the lower block connection maybe blocked? I will remove the lower tube and see what is going on down there? Thanks to all of you for your advice! I'll get back to you!

I agree that fitting could be plugged but shouldn’t the exit hose still be getting warm??....I can’t wait till he finds the problem with this!!.....Mark

If the connection on Merc's water pump was that clogged, I would think the hose could be clogged as well.
