Default Ford Big Truck 2-speed rear axle nut size

Ford Barners,

I'm in the process of overhauling the brakes on my 47 COE truck. It is equipped with the stock 2-speed axle. To get to the rear assemblies, I need to remove the axles and hub/drum off of the axle housing.

I haven't removed the axles yet so I haven't been able to answer part of these questions myself. However, I do know I don't have a wrench/socket large enough to loosen the axle locknut. This is Ford part no. 4252 on the diagram.

Questions:
1) what is the nut size?
2) is it hexagonal or octagonal?
3) does anyone manufacture a wrench/socket to fit this nut?

Any help would be appreciated.

Dan

Don't know the nut size but there is a wrench to fit. Came with the truck. It's thin steel with a slot for a handle. Got a similar aftermarket one hanging up somewhere. Don't need anyway. Just use a six inch or so cold chisel with a small ball peen hammer as motive force to remove and tighten. All the nuts I ever saw had the scars of other guys that didn't have the tool including my 39 Dump truck. I used a chisel and it worked fine.

Very true. Most of the people who worked on those never had the wrench, and I've seen very few nuts that didn't have chisel or punch marks.

Thanks much.

I was able to get a 2-3/8ths inch octagonal socket for the front hub caps. I still haven't found reference to the size of the rear although I suspect it is also 2-3/8ths but it may be hexagonal.

I'll find out this weekend when I get into it.

Dan, be interesting to know the size. I could take one apart but it's a little cold. The socket I have is 3 and 1/4 X 3 and 7/8ths octagon. Part number is 3256E5 which i'm thinking may be an Eaton number. Fellow I bought it from had lots of Ford parts for sale at a flea market and thought it might fit. What the heck, it was only five bucks. Looks nice hanging on the wall.

Let us know.

2 3/8" fits 3/4 and 1 tons I'm sure the 1 1/2 ton is larger.
