Default Recommended? Gorilla snot or another glue for trunk seals...

Ford barners,

I'm replacing my air vent rubber seal and my trunk seal on my '39, both of which need to be glued in.

I bought a tube of 3M Auto Yellow Super Weatherstrip and Gasket Adhesive (#08001) which should be the old style "gorilla snot" glue.

Is this the stuff to use or have others used other glues to better effect?
I'm not certain what was originally used by Ford - anyone have an idea?
Is there a black version of this adhesive? (I'm told it's nearly impossible to avoid visible gorilla snot residue when installing seals, especially the big ones. It would be nice not to end up with visible yellow spots.)

Thanks,

Dan

Here's the 3M black that I use. Works great. Same as the yellow stuff (#08001) only black (#08008).

I agree with Henry. The 3M black is good stuff.

Use it VERY sparingly, in spots rather than a solid line.

Remember to read and follow the instructions----most people don't and just squeeze it on out of the tube---use a glue brush, spread it on both surfaces to be attached

I used to just squeeze and put it together---then I tried it by the instructions and found it works so much better that way

When you go to buy the black 3M adhesive also ask for the pint can of adhesive remover that 3M makes. It will remove adhesive from paint safely and also from your fingers but I don't know about safely.

Yes there is a black version. I never use the yellow as they say it will get where it isn't suppose to. Also if it does get where it isn't suppose to, either one black or yellow, give it time to dry before trying to remove it. It will soften paint or at least some some paints. Du Pont 3812 enamel reducer will take it off W/O hurting the paint that is if the paint is cured but try it in a place that isn't easily seen first. I have never had a problem with cured paint but as they say, S**T happens.

Big seals, such as the trunk, require at least two set of hands to position it properly, as the trim cement (we use 3M too) works so well repositioning the seal is very difficult. The best way to avoid getting the adhesive outside the intended are is to apply masking or painter's tape next to the work area.
