My 1949 Ford Coupe had factory turn signals. I am guessing that Fords had factory turn signals in 1946.

1939 Buick 1st production car in US with t.s. After Jan 1956, all cars in US required to have them by law. Some European makes had the semiphore signals early on. Check out the article also.

When Holden started installing indicators here in the mid 50s, they used the American system where the brake light flashes. No other car did that and it lasted only one model before they were banned. The indicators must be amber in colour and separate from the other lights. It still works that way today. When I have drive in the US, I understand why our authorities did that.

I've heard that before, but I actually think it's easier to see the turn signal when the entire brake light is what flashes.

I think it is a matter of what you are used to. To us, a brake light is on or it's off. On, the car is braking, off and it's not. Simple! In addition, there are enough red lights on the back of a car. Another unnecessarily red one only confuses things. As I said, indicators are amber - front and back and being the only liht of that colour, they are easy to spot (if that's what you are accustomed to.
Wiring indicators in with the stop light is much more complicated too, FWIW.
