STA LUBE 3131 is the grease to use.

The rollers take a heavy duty grease...same as a heavy truck...look for NLGI 2.5 specification.

I second the STA LUBE 3131 for the rear roller bearings. It is a sodium based fiber grease. I use Lucas red and tacky for the front only because the sta lube is very hard to get where I live so I save it for the rear, but is readily available in your area.

We have used Mobil synthetic first 220 & now 460 in our race cars for 30 plus years. Consequently I have used it in every road car/ truck of my own for that long also. It is an amazing product & the only grease to use in my opinion. The heat & load of our race cars for 500 plus miles with very little grease used in our hubs.

Tony:

Thank you for this. Curious why you moved up to the heavier (?? I'm assuming) 460 from 220?

Grease and oil are those things which will render many different answers when questions come up. The old drum brake sodium soap grease will work just fine. The more modern aluminum soap grease for rotors will also work. They take high temps very well.

Grease Test by Project Farm.
All greases are NOT the same. Very interesting to see how they compare.

That's also what I use on the rear hub roller bearings. I buy it at NAPA. They don't usually carry it on their store shelves, but they will order it in from their central warehouse, and have it for pick up in their local store the next day.

Project Farm is great! Unbiased, evidence based testing to the best of his abilities.

I always hear grease is grease.... They are not all the same.

Yea, he's awesome! Here is a test of where he compared a vintage grease from the 1940's to a modern grease.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7hp..._Qpe2dkKi2vRG6

Here is his Youtube page where he has TONS of videos comparing about everything you can think of. Always look for his data before buying anything. lol

If you watch those Project Farm Youtube Videos that were posted, you'll see:
Lucas 'Red and Tacky'
Walmart Grease
High grade Marine Grease
Grease from the 1940's.

They found all grease is NOT created equal. Grease has come a LONG way since back in the day, and cheap grease doesn't work nearly as well as the higher quality offerings out there. Across the two videos, you'll see how the Lucas makes the others look like Silly Putty. lol Looking at the wear marks on the bearings in the friction/protection test, you'll see the Walmart and 1940's grease did TERRIBLE, and the Lucas had barely any damage.

Nostalgia is great for some things, but lubricants have come a LONG way since back then!

Good Luck!

Don't forget that what Project Farm conducts is "lab" based studies/procedures which don't always aline with real world situations. Data is great but many factors can sway a result or paint a picture that is skewed. As we learned first hand from school, theory is not always practical.

I don't believe his results necessarily apply to sta lube 3131 as it is a completely different type of grease than tested and compared by project farm. The grease he tests is general/multi purpose lithium based, while sta3131 is a drum brake specific sodium based short fiber grease. It's comparing apples to oranges.

Sta3131 is a modern grease not a 40 yr old unopened can of grease. It resembles fibre filled grease from back in the day as it compares in looks and texture as the Lucas and Wal-Mart grease compared in looks and texture to the 40yr old unopened grease.

Something designed for a specific purpose is better suited for that purpose than a general or multi purpose item, wouldn't you think?
