Default Still not right

Stock 1939 deluxe coupe - New battery, new generator - have electric fuel pump

Read advise here - sent Coil to Skip and he rebuilt

Car starts great cold - choke and two pumps and starts right up

Warm - car will eventually start but need to crank at least 4-5 times

What's the experts here think?

As always thanks!

I think I'd look at the carb next, as long as your satisfied with all the ignition components doing their job.

thanks Vic - I haven't looked at points you think that could be culprit?

Car runs gr8 after it starts - no hesitation or miss - so I would think carbs (I have dual 94s) are fine.

There are any number of individual or combined parts/components, both electrical and fuel related, that could be contributing to your hard starting problem. I would want to make sure the distributor is functioning properly, points. condenser, etc. Have you balanced the carbs? Is your electric fuel pump a primary pump, or is it only used to prime the carbs? What about the flex line from the fuel line to the fuel pump, they are prone to cracking (with age) and will let air into the fuel and fuel pump...

Check valve in fuel pump or air leak in flex hose. Get a Teflon lined flex hose with built in check valve. This keeps the fuel in the pump and line from draining back to the tank. Just put one on my 39 convertible sedan last week with same problem, starts right up now. "Get HOSED" from Bob Shewman [email protected] G.M.

This is typical of these cars. After running, the engine is hot and tends to boil the fuel out of the float bowl. When trying to restart, do not pump the peddle as there probably is plenty of fuel laying in the manifold and will tend to flood the engine. There are check valves in the fuel pump.

You are correct however, he said he's running an electric fuel pump, and I would guess that it is located near the gas tank, not the carb.

30-9,
With a 94 fuel leak down into the intake is common on 'tired' carbs. We jump
in, pump the acc pedal when as Jack mentioned there is a sopping wet intake already.
What seems to work is ONE pump on the pedal and keep the pedal on the floor so
the throttle plates stay wide open allowing mucho O2 in.
Jack mentioned fuel boiling too....you would be pleasantly surprised with the
insulating effect of one extra carb to intake gasket in reducing this phenomena.
Not to drag this out...as I usually do....be somewhat wary of some phenolic
and some foam spacers intended for insulation purposes. These things can and do
develop hair line cracks aka vacuum leaks which will drive you nuts. Ask me how I
know.
