Default Hello! Mart here dropping in from the V8 side.

Hi. I just posted up a thread on the early V8 section about finding tdc by the solid stop method. As it isn't necessarily flathead specific, I thought I'd say hello and post it here too. Most of my stuff is flatty related but if you enjoy the video please check out my other videos and maybe give me a sub. Thanks a lot, hope you guys are all doing well.

Welcome to a tech short from Mart's Garage. This method of finding TDC will work for any engine. Just rig up a pointer and a stop over No.1 piston. You need to stop the piston around 1/4" down the bore. I hope you find this useful. This is a follow up to a similar video I made. In that one I show how to make a simple pointer and some techniques relevant to the Ford Flathead. This time around I realised it could be a lot easier than I had thought. Watch as I find this out for myself.
Cheers!
Mart.

Nicely done Matt! I started doing that on my performance engines, now do it on all of my street engines too, makes it easy to use a timing light. What is that tag riveted onto the front of the block, an engine builders tag?

Thanks Jim. Yes, it's a rebuild tag. It stated 30 thou over on the pistons, 10 on the mains and 10 on the big ends.

I always try and add the pointer and mark. And when the motor is in just that state of build it's the ideal time.

Mart, thank you for sharing. I always enjoy learing a new automotive technic.
So simple and so on the money. Glad you "came over" to visit with the 4-bangers.

Thanks PalAl. Glad you enjoyed it.

I have a lot of videos up on youtube, mostly V8 related but as we're all finding ourselves with a bit of time on our hands at the moment, some may enjoy dropping in for a visit. (While observing social distancing of course).

cheers!

Mart.
