Default Clutch adjustment help

51 merc clutch question.

How do I make adjustments? The pedal will go all the way to the floor and return fine but I’m not able switch gears.

Any help on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

Also when installing the cross bar and attaching it to that flat key piece that comes out of the trans. Does that need to be turned any certain way before connect both pieces together? See photos with red circles.

There is no wrong way to connect the clutch cross shaft to the ear on the clutch throw out shaft. Can you feel the point where the throw out bearing touches the pressure plate? The resistance to pedal movement goes up sharply. That should happen at the point where the pedal is depressed from its fully returned position about 1 to 1.5 inches. If it is much more than that, the clutch may not be fully disengaged at full pedal deflection. That would make shifting difficult.

I didn’t really feel any resistance when pushing and releasing the pedal. I’ll check again tomorrow. Someone had mentioned that when installing the clutch cross shaft that it should be turned clockwise as far as it can go. Is that true?

If it has an inspection plate take a look to see what is going on inside when someone depresses the clutch.

At the clutch area if you are trying to diagnose the clutch release.

On top of your tranny there are 2 screws holding a plate in place. Move the plate to look see where your shaft prongs(fingers) are in relation to your T O bearing then depress your clutch pedal. You need to remove the transmission cover to access this.

The notch in the clutch cross shaft has to line up with the ear on the throw out shaft on the transmission. So turn it to that position.

As suggested by others, remove the inspection plate and look to see if the fork on the throw out shaft is present, and pushing the throw out bearing when the clutch pedal is depressed. Maybe the fork is not properly pinned to its shaft.

::Update::

I made the adjustment to the clutch pedal itself under the floor and seems to be working fine now. I appreciate the help guys. This is the first time putting everything back together and someone had mentioned I had to turn the clutch cross shaft bar clockwise before installing so that’s why I thought something else was wrong.
