I've seen a photo of new cars being transported and they only had a rim on the spare tire carrier. Was a spare tire something the dealer sold to the new car purchaser?

Wouldn't it have been better to have a spare tire and no wheel?

I believe my friends 1927 Buick just came with the tire. It's like a Tudor, but I'm not sure what it's called.

If they provide the wheel they are betting the dealer can sell the tire! When you keep the initial price low it works in the advertisements.

Yep, even in the 70's, the new Chevy pickups only came with a bare wheel, and I installed the tire as part of the dealer prep.

1966 IH came with spare rim, no tire. MANY early trucks I've seen had rim under truck and no tire ever added.

Hello the rim came as standard equipment but the tire is an option, usually an up charge at the dealer. I also think the bumbers and brackets were also added cost but were put on at the factory.Chances of Model A s having 5 matching tires were slim . I think it’s covered in Model A Ford judging rules.

My dad bought a new '32 Model B std. coupe, it came with a wheel, no tire. If he had bought a tire from the dealer it would have put the cost of the B to over $500, so he bought one from a Firestone dealer.

Not sure, but I think bumpers and spare tire(s) were pretty much "mandatory options". I suppose if a customer insisted on not having them, the dealer would delete them to save the sale. But I'd guess most buyers didn't object to having them included.

I've seen an invoice and don't remember if Bumpers were listed as an accessory. Maybe someone knows the answer. I believe they were part of the original purchase price.

I think the earliest pre-production photos/ads showed the cars without bumpers but as actually released, the bumpers were in fact installed.
Didn't they actually refer to rear bumpers as "fender guards"? |

Don't know about fender guards but fenders are often referred to as 'mud guards'.

![]() Yeah, pickups did not come with bumpers - wouldn't do much good anyway as the box sticks out farther than the bumper would.
