Default What is secret to installing new zerks?

I'm trying to install some new grease fittings. They are press-in style, and seem too large in diameter to fit into the hole. I've lubed the hole and the zerk, and tried tapping with a small hammer, then a bigger hammer. No luck.

Gotta be a secret way. Any ideas?

There is a special tool sold at the "A" parts houses for that purpose. It fits over the zerk and you pound on the tool. It always worked for me.

Yup the tools work great. I've actually found 2 different kinds one for original style zerks and one for the modern style. They are supposed to be a little over sized for a press fit to avoid falling out.

Can use a socket, about 3/8 or so. But you can throw the socket away after using it. (or keep it for future zerks)

I have never had a problem driving in zerks with the special tool - shackles, spindles, etc. Maybe you have some zerks that weren't made properly. If you have one of the old zerks you removed, mic it and see if it is the same size as the new zerk.

I have the same situation with the zerks seeming too fat to go into the holes on nnew shackles. I have the driver tool and will have to try just wapping them hard, which seems like a bad idea.

Pictured in the center of my Avatar is a grease fitting tool sold by Rimac and sometimes available on the bay for removing and installing fittings.

RE the shackles, very true but they will go in. The tool shown above only works on straight nipple zerks. If you are trying to drive in the kind with 45 deg or others that are angled, you will need to add a slot to the side to fit over them.
