What's the best gasket cement to use on heads, oil pans, water pumps, etc.
I need to buy some new stuff as all of mine is too old to consider using.

Grease on the water pumps, silicone on the oil pan gasket and on the head gaskets, it depends on the gasket material your using.......Mark

I don't use anything on the gaskets. Grease would be OK as it would keep the gasket from sticking if you have to remove something.

That's all I ever use. Just grease. Saves scraping off a lot of cooked on gasket or cement or both.

That's really interesting how many of you just use grease. I never would have guessed that.
Thanks for your help.

Vote #4 for grease. If you consistently need something more, you should re-think the thoroughness of your surface preparation.

Likewise, that's all I use the gaskets located between properly prepared mating surfaces.

After scraping cement off the surfaces of some thing "that I would never ever have to remove", I now use grease on all gaskets.

We paint assembly lube with the acid brush. This lube is kind of stickey.

I like to use copper spray on copper head gaskets, everything else grease, unless I'm dealing with a very porous surface or a poor alignment which a decision would need to be made on repairing that issue if possible. I never reuse head gaskets. JMHO

for what its worth i recon you cant go past a stuff from loctite called 515 looks like plum jam wont set unless under pressure [bolted up] has the ability to fill most minor imperfections can be used with or without gaskets doesn't clog oil galleries and best of all if you have to separate parts at some stage you wont need a stick of dynamite and a tyre lever to do so but all things have their limits and its no good for heads or exhausts being a heavy mechanic by trade it doesn't take long to work out what works

Question Re: Gasket Cement

Just curious since I have never used grease on gaskets before, is there any specific grease ie: grade, low temp, graphite, ect recommended, or does it matter? Bill

From the HVAC side of life we typically us a copper base never-seaze, I have always used this on bolts and any gaskets that are of that thin brown type material.

I just use a light rub of wheel bearing grease on the gaskets. As stated, easier than scraping...Chap

For water, oil, and vacuum with paper or cork gaskets I use Yamabond #4, made by Yamaha. It will maintain a seal under heat, pressure, resistant to oil, gas, no hardening, and very easy to disassemble and clean-up. Using grease, which is oil and thickeners, on an oil pan gasket, for example, means you are relying on the thickeners for their sealing properties.
