Looks like a HD 3-speed. Used in F1, F2, and F3.

Many of the heavy duty 3-speed T87D-1 transmissions have that number on the side but that may have been a Ford manufactured unit. It looks to have been set up with the F1 type rear mount without the hand brake drum.

I was told it came off a 51 1/2 ton.

What might it be worth if you didn't really need it?

These heavy duty three speeds are very desirable and not very common. The last one I saw for sale was over $1000. Is it a top-loader? Put it for sale on the Swap Meet.

The F1 or F2 guys will snap them up if they find them. It can be used for a hot rod but they are heavier. I don't know if they will work with a 10-inch clutch set up or not since they always came with the heavy duty 11-inch clutch. It would be interesting to find that info out for certain.

That’s a Borg Warner T 87 heavy duty 3 speed trans. It has a fairly low ratio first gear but it is desirable for the F1 and F2 pickup guys. They have a modern synchro into 2nd and high gears (no synchro for first or reverse). It’s pretty heavy and bulky for a hot rod. T87’s are floor shifter type.

They work with the 10” and 11” clutches. You’ll want to be sure to get the cast iron adapter that bolts to the front of the gearbox case.....it has the necessary clutch release shaft and fork for the throw out bearing. This adapter has the big round bolt pattern and would bolt up to the cast iron 8RT truck bell housing.

The main reason they are desirable for trucks is that 1st and 2nd are lower than in the light duty 3sp. That lets you run a taller rear gear for cruising without excessive clutch slipping to get rolling.

Make sure it also has the drive yoke for the output, and if possible get the front u-joint too.
