steering wheel nut - how tight?
Installing an original steering wheel. Have read in the books and tech hints, to not over tighten the nut that holds the steering wheel on and then use locktite or maybe blue permatex on the threads first?
Any idea of how tight it should be? So far if I tighten some (about a half turn after finger tight), then the wheel just barely starts to rub underneath and the wheel will still come off without needing a puller so it seems a bit too loose to me. Any recommendations?

Les Andrews states to snug it up carefully. Too tight and it can snap off down the road.

Re: steering wheel nut - how tight?
It’s a taper like the rear axle, take a large socket and tap on the wheel “ with a big hammer” and set the wheel to the shaft, you could use an external or internal lock washer, 1/2 a turn tight on the nut.

Re: steering wheel nut - how tight?
Thanks. It turns out my column cover was not pushed down fully tight with the steering box before the clamp was set. Another forum member PM'd me to check this. All rubbing now gone.
Also, I now know it is best to set the wheel on with a socket (and big brass hammer, LOL), then the nut is really not a problem, as it does not have to be tightened much.

Re: steering wheel nut - how tight?
The nut behind the wheel needs two glasses of wine so he dosen’t get too tight.

Also, the threaded shaft repair sleeve will stretch and the wheel will work loose on a regular basis unless the wheel is first set as mentioned in a previous post. |

Re: steering wheel nut - how tight?
30 lb ft torque? Much the same as a sparkplug. SNUG is open to interpretation.
You don't want to stretch the threads. |
