Default Anti Rattle Springs

In a previous post of my, a long time ago, it was pointed out to me that I had installed the anti rattle springs incorrectly. I was told the they should go on the side, closer to the rear brake.

One of the anti rattle springs has only a round hole that will not go over the eye at the end of the rod, and will not go over the bump in the rod.

The other anti rattle spring has an elongated slot, but that slot is not big enough to go over the eye at the brake end of the rod.

So, my question is, where do these anti rattle springs mount on the brake rods?

the ones with the 2 round holes are for the emergency brake rods, your rods eyes look too big/fat and are probably repos that dont quite fit in the slots.

the springs should mount in a way to help retract the brake rods.

Do you have the Les Andrews book? If so there is a diagram on page 1-45...

The antirattlers slide on from the clevis end...you need to remove the clevis..

The antirattlers put pressure on the rods pushing the rod toward the respective brake drum/actuating arms

John, you have to take off the adjustable end of the brake rod which should be at the cross shaft end.

This is the way that I had them installed. Installed on the clevis end such that the springs pressed on the bump in the rod and pushed toward the brakes. The previous post told me this was wrong, that they should push on the opposite side to return the brake to the "rested" position.

In my picture, I took the clevis off the rod and removed the springs. So, I will reinstall them as I originally had them.

Thanks all!!!!!!

Hey John, think of those "anti-rattlers" as return springs for the brakes. Since the adjustable end of the rods are all suppose to point forward, hand as well as service brake, install the springs so they are on the rearward side of the lumps on the rods. This being said, you should be able to slip them over the fixed end and slide the spring down the shaft, if the end is larger than the hole, then simply remove as little as possible to get the spring over the fixed loop.

Nothing on these is brain surgery. Some of the re-pop springs I have found are a bit small on the hole size, so a flat and round file may be needed.

The page from Les Andrews, 1-45 is quite confusing. The assembly are the parts show the springs as pushing toward the brakes. The blow up circle shows exactly the opposite.

Previous posts above identify two different methods.

One says push toward the brakes and that off the clevis hooks.
The others say put the anti brake springs over the eye hooks.

Color me confused. Which is it?

The springs push towards the brake drum..the brake actuating arms are on the brake drum.......the drawing is correct...

That's not totally correct. It needs to be put over the brake rod eyelet for the front brakes (or fixed end) in order to push toward the brake drum (and adjustable end).

Just remember to install so the spring is pushing toward the brake drum.

I've looked for a good picture but have come up empty.....

Do you have a picture from your post when you were told that they were wrong?

Are your adustable clevis' (aka fish eyes) at the backing plates? The round eye on the brake rod should be on your brake cross shaft... The springs with the slot MUST go over the rod eye...

I have reinstalled the anti rattle springs just as I had them originally.

These are on the rear. Again, both anti rattle springs are pressing against the nob on the rod, pressing towards the brake levers on the rear brake.

Thanks,

I agree the picture in #7 is confusing because I first thought of it as being the left side, but it's only correct for the right side, and should be labeled "RIGHT SIDE".

The front springs should be mounted on the FRONT side of the mounting bracket, and push the brake rods forward.

The rear springs should be mounted on the rear side of the bracket, and push the rods rearward.

As mentioned, the repro rods need to be ground thinner so they fit through the slots.
