35-40 Frane Question
The “X” in the center of the 40 frame I believe drops below the height of the outer frame rails - can anyone tell me what that drop amount is?
Working on my wife’s 40 pickup build ( sorry - not a Flathead) with a modified “X” member to accommodate motor/tranny .... Thanks for any help you can give ..... |

Re: 35-40 Frane Question
It looks like about 1.5 to 2" lower at the wishbone mount. The frame rails rise toward the front.
I'll take a picture and post it later.

Re: 35-40 Frane Question
Thanks so much from your response as it’s been a long time since I played with a 35-40 frame. The center of my “X” is gone and using 40 frame rail pieces I have bridged the front and the back of the “X”. Now, I seem to remember the actual rails of the X dipping below the bottom of the outer rails. If that is the case I need to know by how much.
I hope this is clearer than mud .... lol! |

Re: 35-40 Frane Question
It's lower by the offset of those braces. I'll try and get a measurement off my 41 pu.

Re: 35-40 Frane Question
Tom...Below are two pics showing a '35 frame center section box removed in one piece. Look closely and you'll see the LOWERED part where the wishbone ball socket is. The other shot shows across the bottom of the same center section area and you can see the lowered section in relation to the X-rails. Pardon the black gizmo...that's the mock-up for our little shorty Jeep-based T5 that bolts-up to the torque tube. (Click on "T5 W/TORQUE TUBE" at lower left if you want to see the whole project.) Hope this helps ya! DD

Re: 35-40 Frane Question
I have a bare 1937 frame that I measured in front of the X and behind the X. In front of the X where the transmission mount is, the center rails are 7/16" lower than the side rails. Behind the X, where the brake cross shaft is mounted the center rails are 3/8" lower than the side rails.
The X rails are above the frame rails by the time you get back to where the two body mounting pads are on the outside of the frame, where the frame kicks up in front of the rear axle location. This dimension is 3/16" above the side rails. The mounting pad for the wishbone, the area just behind the wishbone mounting in the X (looks like a big drain hole) and the two crossmembers are lower than the dimensions above. At the direct bottom of the X it is approx. 1/8" lower than the bottom of the frame rails (measured using a level, and tape measure). Forward of the X where the wishbone "socket" resides is approx. 1 1/2" below the bottom of the frame rails. Hope this helps
