Default Fan Belt

Hello,

Need to replace the belt in my 30 Coupe.
Anyone have a brand/part # for Advanced Auto, Auto Zone etc.

I hate to have to order from Bratton’s & wind up paying more for shipping than the cost of the belt .

thanks

Tighten only enough to operate the alternator/gen. You don't want to overload the fan pulley that is cantilevered from the fan hub to shaft connection.

The belt I have is BX40
B=width
X=cogged
40=length

Brand is Goodyear

I bought these at an industrial rubber supply house just because they had a better supply.

Tam sold me 42-6324 B size belt. This after I complained about a belt he had sold me earlier as too loose. (not sure that)

This second go-around he had questions for me. What kind of generator? (long or PH) Standard water pump? "Here" he says, "You want this one." And handed me the 42-6324.

He says "You have to have your pulley off your generator but you put this on the pulley, and then put the pulley on the generator, and then tighten everything up and it will work."

He was right but I know nothing about who or what 42-6324 is. I see from a forum search that others are similar questioning.

I did a search of this forum and found that Amazon has a 5L440 for about $8. I bought two to try them and I think you'ld be hard pressed to find a better belt, even for twice the price. It's a wrapped belt, not cut and it fit perfectly.... Can't beat it...

To measure a belt with no markings or the marking worn off, do you measure the outside circumference? I have a fan belt that has no markings on it and it fits so I want one the same size. From this thread it appears 42", 43" and 44" belts are shown. It seems like only one size would be correct.

Around the top of the pulleys so outside circumference

Place the belt on a flat surface w/the outside of the belt down, place a pencil mark on the side of the belt and another pencil mark on the flat surface beside the mark on the belt, roll the belt along until the pencil mark comes around again, when the pencil mark is back down on the flat surface make another mark on the flat surface. Now measure the distance between the 2 marks and you have your belt length. Simples.

It should never be necessary to remove the pulley to install the belt. Slip the belt over the crank pulley and water pump pulleys first, then slip it over the generator last, and as Jackson said, only make it tight enough to not slip when the lights are on. When the lights are on, the generator is working the hardest, if you use a voltage regulator. If you use the stock generator with third brush regulation, the generator will not work harder unless you move the adjustable third brush for more output.

Pi times the diameter equals the circumference.

If you select a belt that is too long, you will have to move the generator/alternator too far to the left of the car to get the tension right. That often allows the belt to rub the bottom radiator hose where it comes out of the radiator. Do you have the old one, stretched and all as it will be to use as a guide?

They make belt measurers. A good auto parts store might have one. I buy mine from brattons and they fit and look fine.

I bought my belt from Bratton's about 20 years ago, and it still looks like new.

After I did the vinegar flush a few years ago, some of the mess got on the belt, and now I have a slight belt squeak that won't go away.
