Rear spring shackles
Is it possible to replace rear spring shackles while the rear axle assembly is still attached to the car?

Re: Rear spring shackles
Just did it with rear spreader and clamps for added security. There are a couple of repro shackles made; get the latest ones that look like originals with grease grooves irrespective of country origin. I found that the flat bar types can bend. Also, the bushings didn't need reaming
in my case. |

Re: Rear spring shackles
It is possible. I will also recommend the good shackles. The cheap shackles work but the play in the bushings is absurd.

Re: Rear spring shackles
With the help of a spring tensioner that is no problem!

Re: Rear spring shackles
If the bushings need to be changed it is necessary to remove, or at least loosen, the brake backing plates to get direct access to the bushing bores. Job simplified if the entire axle is pulled. Just finished a bushing job today. If the spring bushings need to be changed it would be easier if the spring is dropped. If the shackles are worn chances are the bushings are bad.
