Gear Reduction Starter feed back please

Hi I am looking for feed back from guys with Gear Reduction Starters
How well they work and have there been any problems
I have just recovered the end from my bendix starter form inside the bell housing and do not want to ever do again if the new starters work ok

Another option is to use a "modern" bendix, i am and have had no problems. My flywheel gear is worn and needs to be replaced however the new modern bendix has kept the starter from locking up, and no parts to fall off.

I also use the barrel drive. Like an alternator, the gear rteduction starter just wouldn't look right

Colin, Don't have any personal experience in using the gear reduction starter BUT if your disappointed with the original results, It definitely looks like a very good option and should be a Very trouble free solution, that type of starter is defined as being bullet proof in its past uses and you should never be short of starting power, and if you make your own choice to use one , you probably will not be disappointed.

I have used them for years and never had one fail.

Snyders has them for $275.00 Can't be bad . On a custom build, you can use what you want. I would figure it would be better than an eighty three year old starter , it just would look out of place on an original. The old model A starters are very powerfull. The only one that I have ever been able to tear up was the one that i tried to replace the field brushes on. The field brushes are bronze and may last over a lifetime. I should have left well enough alone with the slightly worn field brushes. The ground brushes are carbon and are an easy mechanical replacement. I've run unmodified model A starters on 12 volt for many years. some with higher compression heads, large over bore and special cams. The old Bendix drive is famous for dropping bolts but the modern starter drive has worked flawlessly so far.

I believe Mr Rainmaker Ron has had a modern Bendix turn into shrapnel on him.

Another thing is he showed me how little the modern Bendix teeth actually mesh with the flywheel teeth, an original Bendix has full contact with each tooth while the modern one only touches the far edge resulting in it wearing out the teeth on both the modern drive and the flywheel... Might want to take a look at your modern drives gear jmeckel.

Id imagine the gear drive ones work just as reliable as a modern car starter but i haven't heard anything...

I use a 12 Volt Gear Reduction Starter made by Five Star parts in Riverside, CA.

Very Pleased with the Starter.

Never seen one, anybody have a picture? My starter locked up and wouldn't pop loose. When I finally got it apart the pinion on the Bendix had worn teeth on the end. I replaced the Bendix with a good used one and it works well.

Barry B, the new gear reduction starter is pictured on page A-142 of the newest Snyders catalog, center column, part number A-11002- X12. Way too expensive for po folks like me!!!!!!!

Before you go out and spend money, how old was the unit that broke? Was it original (80+ years old)?

If the first lasted that long how long will the next one last?

When I installed my new hi compression engine in my car, I also changed the bendix to the modern type. Within two days, the gear on the end shattered into pieces. I then changed back to the original type bendix and haven't had any problems since.

I did replace the Lucas starter on my Lotus with a gear reduction type. Changed the failure rate from every 6 months to 12 months to still having the first gear drive type for over twenty years.
