39 Mercury help
I really need some under hood pictures of a reasonably correct set up. Firewall, radiator/hoses, carb linkage etc. this car has none of these things and I am finding out that starting at the firewall..there is a dramatic difference from a 39 Ford.
email me if you like..dwad(the four numbers nineteen thirty nine)@att.net Thanks in advance.. |

Re: 39 Mercury help
Try posting this request in the Mercury section of the Early Ford V-8 Club site. There are a couple of guys that have restored 39 Mercurys that post there. Here is a link to the Forum

Re: 39 Mercury help
Looks to be a ignition coil for a 46-48 Ford-Merc.

Yep, it's a coil
And...incorrect for a 39 Merc so disregard.

What fan belt do you I use and does anyone have that sheet metal cover over the wire loom on the firewall?

Re: 39 Mercury help
Also.. I have the choke and throttle rod set from Mac's. The choke rod fits fine (but the rubber link is under the dash not in the engine compartment like the picture.) The throttle rod I got is identical to the choke rod and is not long enough to reach the carb. ?

Re: 39 Mercury help
What is the deal with the choke and throttle rods? It appears to me that whether Ford or Mercury, they should be different lengths. ?

Re: 39 Mercury help
The wiring cover looks identical to those used in contemporary Fords.

Re: 39 Mercury help
HMMM. My oil filter is mounted on the front of the left Cylinder head. How do I tell if the engine is appropriate for a 39 Merc?
These pictures really help a lot.. thanks fellas. |

Re: 39 Mercury help
Re the engine should be able to do the pencil test should have frost plug bumps along the block at the pan rail { three I think }.The only way to tell if it is the Merc. engine is to remove a cylinder head and measure the bore ,3 3/16 I had to lengthen my choke ,throttle rods if the rubber inserts that the two rods fit through in the dash are bad no one makes them I had to make mine using a two part liquid rubber. I can likely help you should you have other concerns There are a great car, you will like it when finished .Mine was on the front cover of the V8 times ,jan-feb 2015 .John---- [email protected]

Re: 39 Mercury help
The wiring loom cover is interesting. The black one is more bulbous while the one on Rockflas post appears to me more flat. I pulled a flat one off a 39 Merc wreck at Horopito Wreckers about 25 years back. I've seen the other type on various Fords.

Re: 39 Mercury help
Flat was the early type.
Became rounder after complaints about wires squashed and shorting out. 39 Ford's have an outlet at the top, Mercury does not. |
